Step 1: The JW201 and JW202 Form
You cannot apply for a Chinese student visa without this official form, issued by your admitting university. Request it the moment you are admitted and confirm it matches your passport exactly. A typo here means a rejected visa.
Step 2: X1 vs X2 Visa
Programs over 180 days need an X1 visa, which you must convert to a Residence Permit within 30 days of arrival. Under 180 days uses an X2. Pick your visa type by program length, not by habit, and start the embassy appointment early, as slots fill before intake season.
Step 3: The Document Packet
Universities ask for passport, transcripts, diploma, English proof, study plan, recommendation letters, and a medical form. The mistake is sending them piecemeal.
