Introduction
Ask an international applicant where they want to study in China and you will hear two answers: Beijing, or Shanghai. Both are excellent. Both are also crowded, expensive, and not representative of where most of China’s universities and growth actually sit. This guide is a frank look at ten cities that international students consistently overlook.
Why Look Beyond Beijing and Shanghai
- Lower cost of living (often 30 to 50 percent less)
- Stronger universities in specific fields
- A more “real” China experience
- Easier commuting, more space
- Active international student communities with less competition for attention
The Ten Cities
1. Hangzhou
Home to Zhejiang University and Alibaba. The city blends West Lake calm with a serious tech scene. Living costs run 20 to 30 percent below Shanghai, with the Hangzhou ecosystem as a bonus for data science and tech students.
2. Nanjing
Nanjing University and Southeast University. A historic capital with strong humanities and engineering programs. Calm, walkable, more affordable than Beijing or Shanghai.
3. Wuhan
Home to HUST, Wuhan University, and a long roster of English-taught programs. A young, energetic city with some of the lowest living costs among major Chinese cities.
4. Chengdu
Sichuan University and a growing tech base. Famous for food, slower pace, pandas, and a creative-class vibe. Engineering and medical programs are well represented.
5. Xi’an
Northwestern University and Xi’an Jiaotong University. Ancient capital, aerospace and engineering tradition, lower cost, a very different cultural flavor.
6. Tianjin
Tianjin Medical University and Nankai University. A coastal city near Beijing with strong medicine and engineering programs. Cost sits between tier-one and tier-two.
7. Qingdao
Ocean University of China and Shandong University (Qingdao campus). Coastal, clean, mid-size. Strong for marine sciences, German-Chinese business, and pre-med.
8. Suzhou
Soochow University and industrial-tech parks near Shanghai. A garden city with multinational exposure and easy access to Shanghai jobs.
9. Xiamen
Xiamen University. A coastal island city famous for campus beauty and business programs. Smaller community, but tight international support.
10. Chongqing
Southwest University and Chongqing University. Mountain city, hot climate, spicy food, low cost, and a unique urban landscape. Growth is rapid.
How to Pick
- Climate matters. Northern cities (Harbin, Tianjin) have harsh winters; southern cities (Guangzhou, Xiamen) are warm year-round.
- Cost matters. Wuhan and Chengdu can be 40 percent cheaper than Beijing or Shanghai.
- Industry match matters. Tech in Hangzhou, aerospace in Xi’an, medicine in Tianjin and Wuhan, business in Suzhou near Shanghai.
Bottom Line
The “best” city is the one matching your budget, your climate preference, and your academic program. Use this list to expand your shortlist, then check each university’s English-taught offerings to confirm.
