2027 China University Applications Are Opening: Key Deadlines International Students Should Know

Oct 23, 2026

If you are planning to study in China in 2027, the application season has already started.

Many students assume they can wait until the spring of 2027 to begin preparing. That can be risky. Chinese universities do not follow one national application calendar, and different universities may open applications months apart. Scholarship applications can also close earlier than self-funded admissions.

The safest strategy is simple: start preparing now, even if your target university has not opened yet.

The 2027 application season is already moving

By October 2026, universities have begun publishing application guides and opening selected 2027 programs.

For example, Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) has already released 2027 application information for several international programs. Its 2027 foundation-program application period begins on October 15, 2026, and its Chinese-language and exchange programs also begin accepting applications in October.

That does not mean every Chinese university is already open.

Some universities launch international admissions in October or November. Others begin in December, January, or even later. Undergraduate, master’s, doctoral, language, exchange, and scholarship programs may all follow different calendars at the same university.

There is no single “China application deadline.”

A practical 2027 timeline

For most international applicants, the 2027 admission cycle can be understood in five stages.

October–December 2026: Preparation and early applications

This is the time to build your university list and prepare documents.

Some universities and programs are already accepting applications. Students applying for competitive scholarships, selective universities, or programs with entrance tests should pay particular attention during this period.

You should ideally have the following ready:

  • A valid passport
  • Graduation certificate or expected-graduation certificate
  • Academic transcripts
  • Language test results, if required
  • Personal statement or study plan
  • Recommendation letters, where required
  • Physical examination documents, where required
  • Non-criminal record certificate, where required
  • Financial or bank documents, where required
  • CSCA registration or results for undergraduate programs that require them

Do not wait until the application portal opens to start collecting these documents.

January–March 2027: Major application period

For many universities, this is one of the busiest periods of the admission cycle.

More degree programs usually become available, while scholarship deadlines begin to matter. Some universities process applications in batches, which means an applicant who submits earlier may enter an earlier review round.

This is especially important for students who need scholarships.

A university may continue accepting self-funded applicants after a scholarship deadline has passed.

April–May 2027: Late applications and final scholarship rounds

Many programs remain open during this period, but choices can begin to narrow.

Some universities may close a program when places are filled. Scholarship opportunities may also be more limited by this stage.

Undergraduate applicants should also make sure they have completed any required entrance assessment, including CSCA where applicable.

June–July 2027: Final decisions and admission documents

Many applicants begin receiving final decisions during this period.

After admission, students may need to complete tuition-payment procedures, confirm accommodation, provide missing documents, or wait for the university to issue admission and visa-related documents.

August–September 2027: Visa, travel and registration

Once the university issues the required admission documents, students can move into the pre-arrival stage.

This usually includes:

  • Applying for the appropriate study visa
  • Arranging accommodation
  • Booking travel
  • Purchasing required insurance
  • Preparing original documents for registration
  • Checking university arrival and registration dates

An admission offer is not the final step. Missing the university’s registration or visa requirements can still delay enrolment.

Undergraduate applicants need to watch CSCA

One major change in the current admission landscape is the increasing use of the China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) for international undergraduate applicants.

Universities may require different CSCA subject combinations depending on the program and teaching language. Mathematics is commonly required, while physics, chemistry, or Academic Chinese may also be required depending on the major.

If you are applying for a bachelor’s degree in China in 2027, check the CSCA requirements of every university on your shortlist.

Do not assume that one set of test subjects will work for every program.

Scholarship deadlines may come earlier

A common mistake is to treat the university application deadline and the scholarship deadline as the same thing.

They are often different.

Chinese Government Scholarship programs, university scholarships, provincial or municipal scholarships, and other funding schemes may have separate application windows and additional requirements.

If funding is important to you, build your application plan around the earliest scholarship deadline, not the latest university deadline.

Apply early, but do not rush an incomplete application

Early preparation is useful. A careless early submission is not.

Before submitting, check:

  1. Whether the program is actually open for 2027.
  2. Whether the program is taught in Chinese or English.
  3. Whether your academic background matches the entry requirements.
  4. Whether HSK, IELTS, TOEFL, CSCA, or another test is required.
  5. Whether the scholarship has a separate application.
  6. Whether documents need notarisation or translation.
  7. Whether the university requires an application fee.
  8. Whether any document must remain valid until a specific date.

Requirements can differ significantly between universities.

What should you do this week?

If you want to start university in China in 2027, you do not need to submit ten applications immediately.

You do need to get organised.

Start with three steps:

First, shortlist universities and programs.
Compare the major, teaching language, city, tuition, scholarship options, and entry requirements.

Second, identify your earliest deadline.
This may be a scholarship deadline, a university application deadline, or a testing deadline.

Third, prepare the documents that take longest.
Transcripts, recommendation letters, notarised documents, language tests, physical examinations, and CSCA preparation can all take time.

One final rule: always check the university’s latest notice

China’s international admissions system is decentralised. Universities publish and update their own requirements, and dates can change.

Use guides to understand the process, but use the latest official university notice to make the final decision.

The 2027 cycle has started. Applicants who prepare early will have more time to compare programs, complete tests, correct documents, and make better decisions before deadlines begin to cluster.
